1.  Describe the progression of the Bishop\u2019s dying requests\u2014how well does he understand his situation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.  Ruskin, as indicated in the Norton <\/em>note, mentions several \u201clate Renaissance\u201d qualities brought out by Browning\u2019s poem: find some instances of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.  Characterize the Bishop\u2019s religious faith\u2014how seriously do you take his quotations from the Bible at several points in the poem?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.  What sorts of things seem to have animated the Bishop\u2019s life, and how does he imagine the afterlife?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPorphyria\u2019s Lover\u201d (1252-53)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.  What was the relationship between the speaker and Porphyria?  Why did he strangle her, and just at the point indicated by his explanation?  Getting at the heart of this question calls for reflection on the speaker\u2019s understanding of passion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.  The Victorians were as fascinated as we are with the kind of aberrant thought processes (we would call it criminal psychopathy) Browning describes in this and many other such poems.  Why do you suppose we find psychopaths like Porphyria\u2019s lover so interesting?  And when Browning chooses to take on such subjects, what kind of poetry (or social function for poetry) does he implicitly reject?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy Last Duchess\u201d (1255-56)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

7.  Explain the poem\u2019s action\u2014where are the speaker and his guest?  Why is the guest present?  What has the Duke done?  What is he planning to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8.  The Duke spends most of his energy talking about the late Duchess and her image.  What effect does the painting have (or not have) on him as he views it?  In what sense is the Duke\u2019s \u201cart criticism\u201d a kind of revenge against the Duchess?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCaliban upon Setebos\u201d (1296-1303)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

9.  How did Setebos create the world in which Caliban lives, and how does he deal with his creatures?  Has Setebos, according to Caliban, worked out his relationship to his creatures?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10.  What qualities does Caliban possess in common with the God (Setebos) who is the subject of his speculations?  In what ways does Caliban differ from Setebos?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11.  What is \u201cthe Quiet\u201d?  What power does it have, according to Caliban, over Setebos?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12.  At what resolution or understanding, if any, does Caliban finally arrive concerning his relation to Setebos?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cChilde Roland to the Dark Tower Came\u201d (1266-71)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

13.  Consider the Norton editors\u2019 note on the interpretive history of \u201cChilde Roland.\u201d  How do you personally respond to the poem\u2019s chivalric and possibly allegorical overtones, and in particular to Roland\u2019s concluding determination, \u201cDauntless the slug-horn to my lips I set, and blew\u201d?  What is the quest or \u201cpath\u201d that Roland has been following, and what attitude does he adopt to the sights, sounds, and events he describes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
